McGuinns spacy 12 string, Hillmans melodic, often atonal bass playing mixed with Crosbys gorgeous harmonies to create the Byrds most otherwordly music yet.

Spaceman, I See You, and Whats Happening, in which jazz met acid for the first time. Amazingly, with Clark gone, McGuinn and Crosby managed to come up with some stunning new originals to match it: 5D, Mr. The amazing "8 Miles High," included here, was recorded before Clark left the band, and McGuinns Coltrane-inspired leads, Crosbys spaghetti-Western rhythm lines and McGuinn, Clark and Crosbys ghostly harmonies resulted in one of the best songs ever recorded by anyone. 5D practically invented not only psychedia but also jazz-rock. But, the Byrds turned around and made one of the most revolutionary albums ever. With 5D, the Byrds lost their main songwriter Gene Clark which would be a disaster for most bands. One of the most revolutionary albums ever The Beatles and even The Dave Clark Five seemed more adventureous than The Byrds in comparison with their LPs of the time. Apart from "Eight Miles High" and "Whats Happening" most of the others are pretty lightweight. Even the bonus tracks on this CD reek of filler 2 versions of "Why"!!-Okay, they are both different, but not that much. This CD is okay and probably typical for the time, given 45s were the big sellers and LPs usually contained more fill than substance. Its still a great record, and can be enjoyed by any rock aficionado. He is sorely missed on later records, and David Crosbys "Whats Happening?!?!" reflects some of the confusion that the group was going through. This album came at a time when one of the groups best songwriters, Gene Clark, suddenly quit the group because of a combination of factors. Spaceman" was a silly piece of country-rock, "Wild Mountain Thyme" was pure pop-folk magic, and "I See You" was a subtly scary track that really makes you look over your shoulder.

And, whats more, the other songs have some of the strongest songs of the groups career together. The main hit, "Eight Miles High", was an absolutely inspired piece of psychedelic rock that paved the way for acts like the Doors and Love. This album was absolutely groundbreaking, due to its many varied elements.
